Two-time T20 World Cup winning captain Darren Sammy is set to captain the Saint Lucia Zouks for a second consecutive season. Earlier today, the veteran West Indian all-rounder was named as the captain for the franchise for the 2020 CPL season.

The 36-year-old cricketer has been part of the St. Lucia Zouks since the inception of the Caribbean Premier League, and was named captain of the franchise before the 2018 season. Under his captaincy, Zouks finished fifth on the table last season with three wins to their name, narrowly missing out on a semifinal berth.

St. Lucia Zouks coach Andy Flower weighed in on Sammy’s appointment indicating, “I can’t wait to work closely with Daren and for the island of St. Lucia. I worked with Daren five years ago when he captained the Peshawar team in the Pakistan Super League and we thoroughly enjoyed our time together. I know how passionate he is about his island and its cricket and we will do everything within our power to bring fun, entertainment, and success to St. Lucia.”

Sammy himself was excited to be retained by the Zouks and to be captaining this year. He said: “The franchise is dear to my heart and this year I am honored to lead the franchise one more time. Playing at home with passionate fans and the calibre of players I anticipate will be retained, I expect to bring silverware to St. Lucia. St. Lucia Zouks is well on its way in securing its team of players and looks forward to a successful year of cricket in St. Lucia.”

Darren Sammy has been a veteran player in the CPL, playing 62 matches in all where he has scored 856 runs at an average of just above 20. The former Windies captain has also been instrumental with the ball in the CPL, picking up 23 wickets across all seasons.
