Saint Lucia Kings look to seal CPL 2022 playoff spot with win over Guyana Amazon Warriors

Saint Lucia Kings take on Guyana Amazon Warriors in their ninth match of The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2022 as the race to qualify for the playoffs intensifies. The match is scheduled to be played at Providence Stadium, Guyana, on Thursday, September 22 at 7:00 PM local time (September 23, 4:30 AM IST, for audiences in India).

After an underwhelming start to the season which saw them win only one out of the first five matches, the Faf du Plessis-led side have turned things around in style. The Kings head into the upcoming match having won three matches on the trot, including a nail-biter against Trinbago Knight Riders in their last outing.

Johnson Charles extended his good run of form with another half-century to guide Kings to 147/6 before Roston Chase and Alzarri Joseph’s brilliant spell ensured a thrilling one-run win. The victory pushed St. Lucia Kings up to the second spot in the CPL 2022 points table.

Opening batter Johnson Charles, who was recently named in the West Indies’ 15-man squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2022, will be an injury doubt for the Kings.

Darren Sammy-coached side will be sweating to get its star man back fit but face a race against time. The 33-year-old is currently the leading run scorer of CPL 2022.

Meanwhile, it has been an inconsistent campaign so far for Guyana Amazon Warriors, who are languishing at the bottom of the pile.

However, they won their previous fixture against Jamaica Tallawahs to stay alive in the tournament. Odean Smith’s all-round heroics guided them to their second win this season.

With eight points in as many games, the Kings are currently placed second in the table. A win against the Warriors in the upcoming game will seal a top-four finish and cement their place in the playoffs.

On the other hand, it is a must-win game for Guyana Amazon Warriors. If they fail to win on Friday, they would have to rely on other results to go their way to remain in contention for a playoff spot.

Furthermore, in the last 19 head-to-head matchups, the Warriors have come out on top on 12 occasions while the Kings won the other seven encounters.
